Summit Shield Roofing was founded in 2009 on a simple premise: the roofing industry deserved better contractors. Sixteen years later, 4,800+ completed projects, and Middle Tennessee's highest customer satisfaction rating — we think we've delivered.
Treating Every Home Like Our Own
Derek Hayes spent 12 years watching homeowners get taken advantage of — overcharged for materials, shortchanged on labor, abandoned after payment. In 2009, he and his wife Michelle decided enough was enough.
They launched Summit Shield Roofing in Nashville with two crews, a commitment to written estimates, and a policy of never charging more than the written quote. Word spread fast in Brentwood and Franklin. Then Murfreesboro. Then everywhere.
Today, Summit Shield is Middle Tennessee's most-reviewed roofing company — with 847 Google reviews averaging 5.0 stars. We've processed more than $34 million in insurance claims for storm-damaged homeowners. We employ 47 full-time team members, all W-2, all background-checked, all OSHA-trained.
We're still family-owned. Derek and Michelle still review every customer feedback form. And we still operate by the same principle that started it all: your home deserves the same care we'd give our own.

Derek Hayes
Founder & CEO
Derek spent 12 years as a field supervisor for one of the Southeast's largest roofing distributors before founding Summit Shield in 2009 with a simple principle: treat every customer's home like your own. Under his leadership, Summit Shield has grown from a 2-person crew to Tennessee's most-reviewed roofing company with over 4,800 completed projects. Derek holds a GAF Master Elite certification, is a licensed Tennessee contractor, and sits on the board of the Middle Tennessee Roofing Association.
Michelle Hayes
Co-Founder & COO
Michelle oversees operations, customer experience, and the Summit Shield Maintenance Program. With a background in construction management and an MBA from Vanderbilt, she built the systems that allow Summit Shield to consistently deliver 5-star service at scale. Michelle is the driving force behind the company's 98.4% customer satisfaction rating and the architect of the industry-leading 10-year workmanship warranty.
José Reyes
Director of Field Operations
José joined Summit Shield as a crew lead in 2012 and rose through the ranks on the strength of his technical skill and unwavering attention to detail. As Director of Field Operations, he oversees 8 active crews, manages quality control inspections on every completed job, and trains all new field personnel. He's personally installed or inspected over 2,100 roofs.
Sarah Jennings
Insurance & Claims Specialist
Sarah is Middle Tennessee homeowners' secret weapon when dealing with insurance companies. With 11 years in property claims before joining Summit Shield, she understands exactly what adjusters look for and how to document damage to maximize approvals. Sarah has personally guided over 1,300 homeowners through the claims process, recovering an average of 34% more than the initial adjuster offer.
Marcus Bell
Commercial Project Manager
Marcus leads Summit Shield's commercial division with the precision of a general contractor. His background in commercial construction means he speaks the language of facility managers, property owners, and general contractors. Every commercial project Marcus manages comes in on time and within budget — a record he's maintained across 340+ commercial projects since 2016.
Lauren Brooks
Customer Experience Manager
Lauren is often the first voice you hear at Summit Shield and the last one to follow up after your project is complete. With a background in hospitality management, she brings a genuine service ethic to an industry that doesn't always prioritize communication. Lauren manages the company's review program, customer callback system, and the annual Roof Care Program.

Summit Shield now employs 47 full-time W-2 team members across Nashville, Murfreesboro, and Clarksville offices.
Invested in Middle Tennessee
We're not just a business operating in Middle Tennessee — we live here, our kids go to school here, and we care deeply about the communities we serve.
Every year, Summit Shield partners with Habitat for Humanity Nashville to provide roofing for new Habitat homes at cost. We sponsor youth baseball and soccer teams across Williamson and Rutherford counties. And we maintain a standing 15% discount for active military, veterans, first responders, and teachers.
When tornadoes or severe storms hit Middle Tennessee, we activate our storm response team and coordinate with TEMA to prioritize elderly and disabled homeowners. Because some things are just the right thing to do.
"Roofing with Purpose" Program
For every residential roof replacement we complete, Summit Shield donates a percentage of revenue to the Nashville Rescue Mission and local family shelter programs. Since 2020, this program has contributed over $180,000 to community support organizations across Middle Tennessee.
